The made to measure was to make a tennis outfit. Now, this wasn’t my original plan. I had ordered a vintage pattern, an all in one tennis outfit that looked fantastic. I was going to make it in red and white striped fabric. However, the pattern never turned up, so I had to resort to my backup plan.

I found the skirt pattern online, and downloaded the PDF pattern. The fabric for the skirt was sourced online at Spoonflower. I loved the neon print and so I wanted to continue the neon theme with the top. The top pattern came free with a sewing magazine that arrived on the day I was trying to work out what to do for a top. I was hoping it may have been a good omen, but it was actually my downfall.

“The skirt is an ace, and the top is a double fault, served underarm” – Patrick

It was a terrible fabric choice for the top. I hadn’t really worked with stretch fabric like this before, and when under time pressure I didn’t give it the care and attention that it needed to sew it correctly. As a result, the neckline was all puckered at the back, the sleeves had been sewn in incorrectly and so these had to be shortened. The only thing that did go well was the piping, but this never got a mention, probably because there was so much that had gone wrong!

I was very disappointed with this challenge, if only that vintage pattern had arrived, I’m sure that would have looked a whole lot better! It was a pretty average week for me, and luckily I made it through!!

Me – “No, Do you?”
