“It’s a well finished piece of sewing and looks fit for Marilyn” – Patrick

Movie week had to be my favourite week. My whole sewing experience had been working on costumes and outfits for drag queens and I was so excited to have come this far. We were so close to the final now, I just had to up my game and get there.

“Do gentlemen prefer blondes?” – Joe

“I’m not fussed” – Me

The first challenge was a pleated halterneck dress reminiscent of the one that Marilyn Monroe wore in the film The Seven Year Itch. I was in my element with this one, I hadn’t sewn with pleated fabric, nor made a halterneck dress but just loved the iconic style of this dress.

With this challenge we couldn’t choose any material from the haberdashery but had to pick one of a selection of colours. I chose blue, my favourite colour. The material was quite challenging to cut out as it would quite easily move about when cutting. Overall everything went to plan, even the invisible zip went in without any drama. There was a lot of hemming to do, and ordinarily the pleated dress would be hung up to allow it to drop before straightening and hemming.

Of course, there wasn’t time to do this, so unfortunately we all ended up with uneven hems. Luckily for me, mine hadn’t dropped as much as some of the others and I was pleasantly surprised when I won this challenge, it took the pressure off a bit.

Since I got the dress back I gave it to my sister to wear for a party, a few adjustments had to be made, but I think she looks even better than Marilyn.
